Abstract:
A detailed study of the Cuevo and Tacurú Groups along the Bermejo̧ river (Argentina/Bolivia, boundary) focussed on the late Palaeozoicand early Mesozoic sequences of Sierras Subandinas. The sedimentary environments were deduced from the study of facies and sedimentary structures. The lower units of Cuevo Group consist of aeolian sediments, with wet and dry interdunes, whereas the upper units are those of a shallow marine carbonate platform and lake deposits. By comparison with other formations containing Permian fossils, the age of the Cuevo Group is considered to range from Early Permian to Early Triassic, the Tacurú Group represents a dune field developed during Late Triassic times. Regional correlations contribute to an improved stratigraphical knowledge of the area.
