The total activity of adenosine triphosphatase has been found to be increased in the erythrocytes from tocopherol-deficient rabbits. The sodium- and potassium-independent enzyme was responsible for the increase of activity since the activity of the dependent enzyme was not altered. "In vitro" addition of tocopherol had no effect on the enzymic activities. The amount of inorganic phosphate of the erythrocyte was higher in the deficient animals. No changes in the activities of the following erythrocyte-soluble enzymes were observed between the control and deficient animals: glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, metahemoglobin reductase, and pyrophosphatase. It is assumed that a different kind of adenosine triphosphatase is produced in the deficient animals. © 1966.
