Several sugar phosphates have been converted to cyclic phosphates or methyl esters by treatment with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide in methanolic solution. The products obtained were then separated by paper chromatography with solvents containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or by paper electrophoresis in potassium or cetyltrimethylammonium borate buffers. The separations obtained were better than those previously described for the untreated esters and the complete procedure could be carried out with less than 0.5 μmole of substance. The compounds obtained in the dicyclohexylcarbodiimide reaction were studied in detail and general rules have been formulated for the prediction of the type of product to be expected in each case. Some correlations between chemical structure and chromatographic or electrophoretic behavior have been observed. © 1963, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
