Abstract:
This paper deals with the description of seven types of fossil zygospores referable to the family Zygnemataceae (Chlorophyta) recovered from the Cullen Formation (middle Tertiary) in the northeast of Tierra del Fuego. These are: Mougeotia sp. cf. M. laetivirens, Mougeotia sp., Spirogyra sp. Tipo A, S. sp. Tipo B, S. sp. Tipo C, Zygnema sp. Tipo A and Z? sp. Tipo B. This is the first report of a pre-Quaternary Zygnemataceae spore assemblage from the Southern Hemisphere. It is of interest regarding the diversity of types, the high representativity of such spores in the palynological samples and their value as palaeoecological indicators.
