Abstract:

Activated carbons are, day by day, increasingly employed, especially for environmental remediation, as their high adsorption capacity makes them suitable for abatement of diverse pollutants from liquid and/or gaseous effluents. The extensive range of applications of these carbonaceous materials has promoted search of renewable supplies for their preparation. In this work, the activated carbons preparation using sugar cane mill waste as raw material is studied through pyrolysis and activation with low oxygen concentrations or carbon dioxide, different temperatures and activation times. The characteristics of the prepared adsorbents at different operation conditions are analyzed from the evaluation of the adsorption capacity. In this way, the adsorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77 K are determined and the specific areas are calculated. It was found that these wastes and the activated agents employed were adequate to prepare activated carbon. The activation conditions affect the quality of the obtained product.
