Las tres especies de cauquenes migratorios (Chloephaga spp.) de Sudamérica invernan principalmente en el sur de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Siendo consideradas perjudiciales para la agricultura, fueron declaradas plaga durante décadas, disminuyendo drásticamente sus poblaciones. Actualmente están protegidas y se encuentran en alguna categoría de amenaza nacional. El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar si existe selección de hábitats por los cauquenes durante la invernada. Se muestrearon la presencia y número de individuos de cauquenes, el uso y disponibilidad de hábitat en tres partidos de la provincia de Buenos Aires durante tres períodos diferentes consecutivos del otoño/invierno 2017. La disponibilidad y el uso de ambientes cambia -ron significativamente durante el período estudiado. A fines del otoño, los cauquenes seleccionaron lotes con rastrojos y laboreos superficiales enmalezados y/o rebrotados de girasol, mientras que en invierno evitaron los cultivos de verano y las pasturas y campos "naturales", seleccionando los cultivos invernales (aunque a mediados del invierno sólo los de más de 5 cm de altura). Esto podría resultar importante para diseñar distintos planes de siembra de cultivos invernales para la región estudiada, ya que una mayor oferta simultánea y conjunta de lotes con cultivos de invierno podría conllevar a una mayor dispersión de las bandadas (menor densidad de cauquenes/lote), tendiendo a equilibrar el desarrollo socio-económico y la preservación de la biodiversidad
The three species of migratory sheldgeese (Chloephaga spp.) from South America, winter mainly in the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, and due to the fact that they were considered harmful to agriculture they were declared pests for decades, reducing drastically their populations. At present, they are protected and they fall under some of the categories of national threat. The objective of this work is to evaluate if there is habitat selection by sheldgeese during wintering. Sheldgeese presence and abundance, and habitat use and availability, were sampled in three districts of the Province of Buenos Aires during three different consecutive periods during fall/winter 2017. The availability and environment use, changed significantly over the studied period. In late autumn, sheldgeese selected stubble and shallow-tillage plots with weedy and/or resprouted sun- flower, while in winter they avoided summer crops and 'natural' pastures and fields, selecting winter crops (but in mid-winter only the taller ones, those over 5 cm in height). This could be important for designing different winter planting plans for the studied region, since a greater simultaneous and joint offer of plots with winter crops could lead to a greater dispersion of flocks (lower density of geese/plot), which may lead to the balance of the socio-economic development and biodiversity preservation
