Bajo ciertas circunstancias los carnívoros pueden matar muchas más presas de las que pueden consumir, este comportamiento se denomina "matanza excedente". En verano de 2018 se encontraron grandes bandadas de Choiques (Rhea pennata pennata) pastoreando en campos linderos a Puerto Deseado, en la Reserva Provincial Ría Deseado, e incluso ingresando a la localidad. Al mismo tiempo se registraron altas densidades de Perros (Canis lupus familiaris) no supervisados en la ciudad. Como resultado de este solapamiento ocurrió una matanza de 68 Choiques por esas jaurías. Este es el primer registro de matanza excedente de choiques por pe- rros en Argentina. Considerar la influencia de perros no supervisados es fundamental para diseñar estrategias de conservación de las especies silvestres, en particular en la periferia de ambientes urbanos
Surplus killing, a common behavior exhibited by carnivores, consists, under certain circumstan- ces, in killing many more prey than they consume. During the summer of 2018, large flocks of Lesser Rheas (Rhea pennata pennata) were found grazing in the fields surrounding the city of Puerto Deseado, in the Ria Deseado Provincial Reserve, and even get in town. At the same time, high densities of stray dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) were recorded in the city. The convergence of the two events resulted in a surplus killing of 68 Lesser Rheas by packs. This is the first record of surplus killing of lesser rheas by predation of stray dogs in Argentina. It is essential to consider the presence of stray dogs when designing conservation strategies for wildlife, particularly in the surrounding of urban areas
