Abstract:
This thesis deals with the topic of the proton spin, and more specifically, the contribution made to it by its fundamental constituents that are quarks and gluons, as seen through a global analysis within the framework of quantum chromodynamics. For this, a replica methodology was implemented that allowed us to very effectively estimate the uncertainties and introduce new data sets and their impacts on the determination of the helicity distributions of quarks and gluons. Regarding the uncertainties, we validated the methodology by making a comparison and a brief discussion with the Lagrange multipliers perspective, obtaining consistent results. Then, based on the reweighting technique, we incorporated into the analysis the data sets from the STAR collaboration of the Brookhaven National Laboratory for dijets measured in polarized proton-proton collisions with energy from the center of mass of = 200 GeV and with energy from the center of mass of √s = 510 GeV for different topologies and also inclusive jets data. Subsequently, a combination of the individual impacts was performed to get an idea of the current state of knowledge we have about the helicity distributions. It should be noted that we include data that had never had an impact study done, which is why these were the first studies related to these sets. We find an important impact both in the shape of the distributions and also in the associated uncertainties that we will describe later. On the other hand, with the aim of carrying out a study of impact projections on the new Electron Ion Collider that will be built soon at Brookhaven, we generated and analyzed the pseudo-data on polarized electron-proton collisions for both inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes in two different energy configurations, as well as inclusive processes with helium target, using the replica methodology mentioned above. We generated a new set of replicas of the helicity distributions which we added the new information that came from the pseudo-data, and through the reweighting technique, we studied both the individual and the combined impact. On the one hand, the inclusive pseudo-data would add very significant restrictions to the gluon helicity distribution, while the data both inclusive with helium target and the semi-inclusive data would generate restrictions for the helicity distributions of the sea quarks, as expected. We find a really remarkable impact, due to the expected precision of the projected experiment, which would allow in the future to have a knowledge of the helicity distributions of both quarks and gluons significant better than our present knowledge. Keywords: spin, quantum chromodynamics, helicity distributions, uncertainties.
