Abstract:
The knowledge of the chondrichthyans life history traits is one of the most important issuess for the stock assessments and to know their vulnerability to the fisheries. In this thesis the life history traits of age, growth, maturity, longevity and mortality of three chondrichthyans species from different taxonomy groups and caught frequently in the San Matías gulf were studied. The species were: the elephant fish Callorhinchus callorynchus (Holocephali), the shark narrownose smoothhound Mustelus schmitti (Selachii) and the eyespot skate Atlantoraja cyclophora (Batoidea). The specimens analyzed were obtained from three different sources: annual fishery research cruises during 2004-2007, landings samplings of commercial fleet and on-board samplings between 2005-2009 and 2011-2012. The age and growth of the narrownose smooth-hound shark and eyespot skate were estimate from growth bands counts in vertebral sections and fit to five growth models. Instead, for the elephant fish two methodologies were evaluate to study growth, the age readings (growth bands counts) in the dorsal fin spine sections and the analysis of length frequency data. For the elephant fish (Holocephali: C. callorynchus), the length range obtained from the commercial landings samplings for the males were between 22-58 cm, measure from the snout to the beginning of the upper lobe of the caudal fin (LCLS) (n = 2126) and for females between 25-76 cm of the LCLS (n = 1571). Besides, the length range obtained from three independent-fisheries research cruises was between 8 to 59 cm of LCLS for the males (n = 1005) and between 14 to 69 cm of LCLS for females (n = 1132). The age reading methodology in the dorsal fin spine was not successfull to age estimation, because it was observe uncertainty and inaccuracy due to the fact the observed bands are maximum amount of growth rings present in the spine section. Twelve group ages for males and sixteen-age classes for females were obtained with the length frequency analysis (Mix- ACOH methodology). The Gompertz L0 fixed (GGFL0 fixed) growth model was selected as the most adequate for both sexes considering the biological criteria. The timated model parameters with this model showed that the females have a moderate growth type (K = 0,17 year-1; L∞ = 70,75 cm; L0 = 10 cm) and the males have a fast growth type (K = 0,257 year-1; L∞= 53,11 cm; L0 = 10 cm). The theoretical longevity estimated for males and females were 13 and 21 years respectively. Differences between sexes in the maturity of elephant fish were observed, with the estimated maturity LCLS50% = 47,48 cm and maturity age (A50%) = 9,34 years for females and LCLS50% = 43,39 cm and A50% = 5,7 years for males. The LCLS50% of females was a 62% of the observed maximum length, while the E50% was a 44% of the longevity. For males, the LCLS50% was a 70% of the observed maximum length, while the A50% was a 42% of the longevity. The natural mortality (M) estimated was between 0,28-0,41 year-1 for males and 0,15-0,30 year-1 for females, with the Maverage of 0,35 year-1 and 0,23 year-1 for males and females respectively. In conclusion, differences between sexes was observe for the elephant fish life history traits in the SMG: the female’s maximum length, maturity age, maturity length and longevity were higher than males, while the female’s growth rate and natural mortality were lower. Future researches on demographic analysis and stock assessments for C. callorynchus should be necessary to evaluate their productivity and resilience. For the narrownose smoothhound shark (Selachii: M. schmitti), the length range obtained from the commercial landings samplings were between 37 and 89 cm of the total length (TL) for males (n = 624) and between 39-106 cm of TL for females (n = 612). The observed ages were between 1 and 15 years for males (n = 179) and between 1 and 21 years for females (n = 193). Growth models fitted were similar for both sexes with not significant differences between sexes. The Von Bertalanfy 2 phases (VBGF-2 phases) growth model for both sexes was selected as the most adequate considering the biological criteria and the statistical criteria of fit (estimates parameters: K = 0,12 year-1; L∞ = 103,12 cm; t0 = -3,56 year; th = 4,4 year; h = 0,11). The K parameter estimated indicates that the narrownose smoothhound shark has a moderate growth type. The theoretical longevity estimated was 24,4 years. Not significant differences were found between sexes for the maturity length. The TL50% estimated for both sexes was 66,9 cm that as a A50%=5,6 years (27% of the longevity). For females the TL50% was a 71% of the observed maximum length and for males the TL50% was a 63% of the observed maximum length. The M estimates were between 0,19 and 0,29 year-1, with the M average = 0,23 year-1. In short, differences between sexes were observed in some of the life history traits of the narrownose smoothhound shark: the maximum and average length, and the maximum age observed were higher in the females than males, while the natural mortality were lower in the females than males. The estimates of this study indicate that the shark M. schmiti has a moderate growth and is one of a species with greater longevity and relatively early maturity age for the genus Mustelus. For the eyespot skate (Batoidea: A. cyclophora) the length frequency obtained from the samplings of commercial landings were between 32 and 68 cm of TL for the males (n = 283) and between 32 and 66 cm for the females (n = 268). Ages observed for males were between 0+ and 8 years (n = 124) and for females were between 1 and 10 years (n = 167). Significant differences were found between sexes for growth models. For the males, based on the statistical fit and the biological criteria, the von Bertalanffy growth model with 3 parameters was the best. The following parameters were estimated with this model: length at birth L0 = 18,7 cm; asymptotic length L∞ = 64,3 cm; and growth coefficient K = 0,25 years-1. Instead, for females based on the statistical fit and the biological criteria, the Gompertz growth model with 3 parameters was the best. The following parameters were estimated with this model: length at birth L0= 23,7 cm; asymptotic length L∞= 68,36 cm; and growth coefficient K = 0,24 years-1. The theoretical longevity estimated for females and males were 12,6 and 10 years respectively. The logistic model estimated a TL50% = 54,13 cm for males and TL50%= 56,72 cm for females, that correspond to a maturity age of 6 and 7,2 years, respectively. The estimated TL50% was a 82-83% of the observed maximum length, while the A50% was a 57-60% of the estimated longevity. The results obtained shows there exist differences between sexes for the eyespot skate: the maturity age, maturity length and longevity were higher in the females than males. The growth coefficient K estimated indicates that A. cyclophora has a relatively fast growth (K ˃ 0,2 year-1), higher than the average estimate for the Rajidae family and the highest growth compared with other species of the Atlantoraja genus. Additionally, A. cyclophora has the lowest longevity within the genus and a late maturity age. This study contributes to increase the knowledge of the biological life history traits of three chondrichthyans species of the Argentinean sea. The observed differences between species demonstrate the importance to study of life history traits at species level. A common pattern in the life history traits may exist when chondrichthyans are compared to another taxonomic group (for example at the class level), but there are continuous life history strategies and different relationships when the parameters are analyzed at a lower taxonomic level (species, family, order or subclass). Therefore, the parameter estimation of the life history at species level is important and also at regionally level, when they are used for stock assessments and for vulnerability analysis.
