Abstract:
In the present study, biophysical and physiological processes that regulate water transport through the continuous soil-plant-atmosphere in the Argentine subtropics were investigated. The presence and role of internal water reservoirs in the water balance of trees in two forests at the extremes of a gradient of water availability in the soil was evaluated. The role of the inner bark and its relationship with the water balance of native trees present at the ends of the soil water gradient was also evaluated. New technologies were used to monitor in situ and in vivo the water behavior of the main stems in the woody species studied. All the species studied showed a daily use of water stored in stems and the contribution of these was in the range of 5 to 60% of the total daily transpired water. Sapwood density was the biophysical trait that better correlated with the main determinants of water balance, such as hydraulic capacitance and stem tissue water content. Species with low wood density showed the highest values of capacitance and water content, as well as a greater use of stored water. Among the studied species a wide range of variation was found in terms of sapwood density (0.189 and 1.22 g cm-3) The use of water from internal reservoirs was associated with daily fluctuations in the stem diameters as well as variations in water content. The hydraulic capacitance of the inner bark was directly and linearly related to its density, a relationship not mentioned until now in the literature. Simultaneous measurements of radius variations in the inner bark and sapwood indicated a good hydraulic connection between both tissues. This work represents the first attempt to the use of water stored in stems of trees in subtropical environments, expanding the knowledge that we have until now about water transport in plants in general.
