Abstract:
Herbivory by insects can induce a wide range of metabolic andphysiological changes in the host plant. Pear sawfly (Caliroa cerasi L.) is one of themost important pests of sweet cherry (Prunus avium). The objective was todetermine the morpho-physiological responses to herbivory pressure (ovipositionand defoliation) of three P. avium cultivars (Bing, Lapins and Van) and tocharacterize plant-insect interaction (anti-herbivory defenses and insectpreference). Infested and non-infested plants by C. cerasi from the three cultivarswere selected in Los Antiguos (Santa Cruz) and Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut). Studies of gas exchange, water relations and hydraulics and determination of leafand stem morpho-structural traits, vegetative growth and fruit production andquality were performed. In addition, an artificial defoliation experiment with threetreatments: Skeletonized (simulating the action of C. cerasi), Cut and Control wasperformed. Field studies indicated significant physiological changes in the infestedplants, such as decrease in leaf nitrogen content and CO2 assimilation and, depending on cultivar, effects on water relations and hydraulic architecture. Antiherbivoredefenses, such as increased total phenols, leaf mass area and the numberof calcium oxalate crystals were induced during the attack. The artificial herbivoryexperiment indicated that the effects were dependent on the pattern of defoliationapplied and artificial skeletonization has similar impact to C. cerasi effects. Cultivars more affected by C. cerasi were Lapins (the less prefered cultivar by theinsect, but with higher herbivory rate) and Van (the most preferred cultivar). Although all P. avium cultivars tolerated defoliation, maintaining vegetative growthand fruit production, there was a significant reduction in the quality of those fruits.
