Abstract:
During the last two centuries, the morphological characteristicsof Cucurbitaceae attracted botanists attention. Particulary the floralstructure. There are many different opinions regarding theorganization of the staminate flower and much work has been publishedon this subject, while on the other hand, the pistillate flower stilloffers many questions. This fact prevented to make furthercomparisions between them and with its respective staminate flowers. A functional focus of the floral structure involves details ofthe reproductive systems (embryology in a wide sense). Investigationspublished on the last 90 years in the field of reproductive systems of Cucurbitaceae deal with typification of the esporogenesis, gametogenensis, embryo and endosperm development. However, otheraspects of the reproductive systems of this family deserve attention. The ovular ontogeny, nucellus development, selection mechanism of thefunctional gynospore and the androsporangium dehiscence are some ofthe subjects of interest, being the fertilization the major question.especially the androphyte behavior while interacting with thesporophyte tissues. In order to answer these questions the floral structure of thefollowing species was studied: Cucurbitella duriaei, Melothriacucumis, Wilbrandia ebracteata, Halosicyos ragonesei, Cayaponiapodantha, Cayaponia bonariensis, Cucurbita andreana, Echinopeponracemosus, Cyclanthera histrix, Sechiumedule and Sicyos warmingii. Details of the reproductive process of Cucurbitella duriaei, Cayaponiabonariensis and C. citrullifolia were also treated. Structures andprocesses were interpreted through the study of seriate paraffinsections, but other techniques such as transmission electronicmicroscopy, epifluorescence microscopy, clearing procedures. pollenculture and histochemical tests were also used. The material studied showed that Cucurbitaceae carpels are sessiland plicate. The ovary develops as an expansion of the carpellarybase, produced by placentigenous (intercalary) meristem in the jointarea between the ventral bundles and the dorsal bundle. The vascularplexus that irrigates this ovary is a consequence of that expansionand represents the connection between the carpellary bundles. Thedifferent ovary structures result from changes in the location andextension of the placentigenous meristem that, in this way, affectsdifferent zones of the carpels. Alterations in the androeciumstructure cause reduction of gynoeciumfrom 5 to 3 carpels. Variationin the number of ovules depends on the extension and activity ofplacentigenous meristem. Apparent migration of the staminodia is aconsequence of changes in the location and activity of the intercalarymeristem which forms the free portion of the hypanthium. Placentationwithin the Cucurbitoideae is axillary and it is understood that thehipanthium is receptacular in the ovary and apendicular in the rest ofits extension. Regarding reproductive systems, the ovular ontogeny suggests morethan one histological origin for the nucellar beak. The nucellusdevelopment is identical to that of the Rosaceae. The selectionmechanism of the functional gynospore is based in the competence amonggynospores rather than the isolating action of the callose deposits. Androsporangium dehiscence is related to the androecium structure. Thefertilization process revealed that during the androphyte germinationof Cayaponia bonariensis and Cayaponia citrullifolia, the medinegenerates the initial pression needed for the expulsion of thesyphonogenic cell. Sperms move together with the syphonogenic nucleus,by means of a fibrous structure that would have its origin in amicrotubular organizing center associated to the nucleolus of eachsperm. The unsuccessful syngamies observed in self-pollinatedspecimens suggest a late-acting self-incompatibility mechanism. Cucurbitella duraei exhibits a completely different behavior ofthe androphyte inside the nucellar beak, from the species of Cayaponia. The androphyte behavior in Cayaponia citrullifolia and C.bonariensis has nothing to do with the embryonutrition. It isproposed that the androphyte behavior of Cayaponia citrullifolia and C. bonariensis, also present in other species of Cucurbitaceae, wouldbe related to an increase in the competence between androphytes (malecompetition) opposite to the decrease in the number of ovules in theovary. On the basis of floral structure and reproductive systems the Grossulariaceae, Saxifragaceae, Oenotheraceae and probably otherfamilies of the subclass Rosidae must be considered as probableoutgroups of Cucurbitaceae.
