Los humedales son ecosistemas de gran importancia por cumplir una amplia variedad de funciones ecosistémicas y albergar una gran biodiversidad. Los Humedales del Santa Lucía, ubicados en el sur de Uruguay, son considerados un Área de Importancia para la Conservación de las Aves. A pesar de su relevancia ornitológica se han realizado pocos estudios enfocados en este grupo dentro del área. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar los ensambles de aves del sur del Área Protegida Humedales del Santa Lucía. Se estimó la riqueza de especies, la composición y la abundancia relativa de aves en los principales ambientes naturales que forman parte del área protegida (Humedales, Pastizal, Bosque Nativo y Playa). Se realizaron muestreos mensuales durante un año en cada ambiente, registrándose las especies de aves y el número de individuos observados. Se registró un total de 198 especies de aves. La mayor riqueza se observó en la Playa (91 especies), seguida por el Bosque Nativo (65), el Pastizal (62) y los Humedales (59). Entre las especies registradas se encuentran aves amenazadas tanto a nivel nacional como a nivel global, así como otras especies prioritarias para la conservación en Uruguay. La importante cantidad de especies e individuos observados refleja la amplia disponibilidad de recursos en el área. Los resultados obtenidos resaltan la importancia de este sitio para las aves y la necesidad de una buena gestión del área para su conservación
Wetlands are ecosystems of great importance because they perform a wide range of ecosystem functions and support high levels of biodiversity. The Santa Lucía Wetlands, located in southern Uruguay, are considered an Important Bird Area. Despite the ornithological relevance of this area, few studies focusing on birds have been carried out there. The aim of this study was to characterize the bird assemblages in the southern part of the Santa Lucía Wetlands Protected Area. Species richness, composition, and relative abundance were estimated in the main natural environments included in the protected area (Wetlands, Grassland, Native Forest, and Beach). Monthly surveys were conducted throughout one year in each environment, and bird species and the number of individuals were recorded. A total of 198 bird species were found. Richness was highest at the Beach (91 species), followed by Native Forest (65), Grassland (62), and Wetlands (59). Birds threatened both nationally and globally, as well as other conservation priority species in Uruguay, were recorded. The substantial number of species and individuals observed reflects the wide availability of resources in the area. The results highlight the importance of this site for birds and the need for a wise management of the area
