El Pingüino de Magallanes (Spheniscus magellanicus) es un ave marina de hábitos buceadores que nidifica en islas y costas de Chile y Argentina incluyendo las Islas Malvinas. El hallazgo de aves marinas varadas en las costas es un fenómeno que ocurre de manera regular. A lo largo del año, individuos de la especie son avistados con frecuencia en la costa noroeste de la provincia de Río Negro. El objetivo general de este estudio es reportar la biometría, proporción sexos y clases etarias de ejemplares de Pingüinos de Magallanes varados muertos en las costas del Área Natural Protegida Bahía de San Antonio. Durante el período junio 2020-junio 2022 se realizaron muestreos sistemáticos de aves varadas en dos sitios y se complementaron con avisos oportunistas. Se contabilizó un total de 288 Pingüinos de Magallanes varados muertos y se analizaron 51 individuos seleccionados al azar. La mayoría de los ejemplares perteneció a la clase etaria juvenil, en menor medida fueron hallados individuos adultos. La proporción de sexos fue significativamente asimétrica, equivalente a una relación de 3.75 hembras varadas por cada macho. Los individuos juveniles presentaron diferencias significativas en su biometría entre sexos, al menos en el largo de ala y el largo del dedo medio. Nuestros resultados se encuentran en línea con reportes previos para la especie en las costas de la provincia de Buenos Aires en Argentina y del centro-sur de Brasil. Este estudio permite una primera caracterización de la ocurrencia de varamientos de Pingüinos de Magallanes para el área de estudio
The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is a diving seabird that breeds on islands and coasts of Chile and Argentina, including the Malvinas Islands. The discovery of beached seabirds on the coasts is a phenomenon that occurs regularly. Throughout the year, it is common to observe individuals of the species on the northwest coast of Río Negro Province. The general objective of this study is to report the biometrics, sex ratio and age classes of dead Magellanic Penguins found beached on the coasts of the Bahía de San Antonio Protected Natural Area. From June 2020 to June 2022, systematic sampling of beached birds was carried out at two sites and was complemented with opportunistic reports. A total of 288 dead beached Magellanic Penguins were recorded, and 51 randomly selected individuals were analyzed. Most of the specimens were classified as juveniles and a smaller proportion as adults. The sex ratio was significantly asymmetric, equivalent to a ratio of 3.75 beached females for each male. Juvenile individuals showed significant differences in their biometric measurements, at least with respect to wing length and middle toe length. Our results are in line with previous reports for the species on the coasts of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina and south-central Brazil. This study allows a first characterization of the occurrence of Magellanic Penguin strandings in the study area
