El Piojito Trinador (Serpophaga griseicapilla) es un pequeño tiránido migratorio que completa su ciclo anual en el sur de Sudamérica, siendo aparentemente un endémico de cría de Argentina. Sin embargo, al ser una especie recientemente descripta carece de registros históricos, por lo que diversos aspectos de su ecología migratoria aún resultan poco estudiados. Aquí utilizamos los nuevos registros disponibles en eBird para describir la migración y fenología del Piojito Trinador. Utilizamos modelos de distribución de especies (Random Forests) y modelos de abundancia (GAMs) para (1) predecir su distribución estacional, (2) asociaciones de hábitat, y (3) fenología migratoria. Aportamos más evidencia de que el Piojito Trinador es endémico de cría de Argentina, siendo el Monte austral la principal región reproductiva de la especie. Luego de su reproducción, el piojito migra al norte y permanece en las llanuras del litoral argentino (de marzo a octubre) y el Gran Chaco (de mayo a octubre), donde es mayormente detectado en arbustales cercanos a cursos de agua. La especie realiza un notorio pasaje migratorio de otoño y primavera (picos a mediados de abril y mediados de septiembre) a través del Chaco árido y sierras de Córdoba y San Luis, reflejando una potencial ruta migratoria. Brindamos más evidencia de la enorme utilidad de los nuevos datos de ciencia ciudadana para la reconstrucción de patrones migratorios y fenológicos en aves. El incremento en calidad y cantidad de registros se reflejará en análisis ecológicos más precisos y detallados
The Straneck’s Tyrannulet (Serpophaga griseicapilla) is a small migratory flycatcher that completes its annual cycle within southern South America, and which appears to breed exclusively in Argentina However, as a recently described species, historical records are lacking, and several aspects of its migratory ecology are still poorly studied. In this study, the new records of the Straneck’s Tyrannulet available in the eBird database are analyzed to describe the species migration and phenology. Species distribution models (Random Forests) and abundance models (GAMs) were used to predict its (1) seasonal distribution, (2) habitat associations, and (3) migratory phenology. Further evidence that the Straneck’s Tyrannulet is an endemic breeder of Argentina, with the southern Monte being the species’ main breeding region, is provided. After breeding, the Straneck’s Tyrannulet migrates to the north and overwinters in the plains of the Argentine Mesopotamia (from March to October) and the Chaco region (from May to October), where it is mostly sighted in shrublands near watercourses. The species makes a notable migratory passage in autumn and spring (with peaks in mid-April and mid-September) through the arid Chaco and the sierras of Córdoba and San Luis, suggesting a poten-tial migratory route. Also, further evidence of the enormous value of new citizen science databases for reconstructing migratory and phenological patterns in birds is presented. The qualitative and quantitative increase of these records will enable more precise and detailed ecological insights
