Muchos ejemplos de importantes procesos ecológicos provienen de sistemas insulares. Esto se debe a su espacio y biodiversidad acotados, y a que usualmente se conoce con detalle su historia geológica y de conexión con continentes. Sin embargo, en Argentina todavía existe un conocimiento rudimentario sobre las aves que dependen parcial o totalmente de ecosistemas insulares. En este trabajo reviso y discuto informa-ción ornitológica de los sistemas insulares de Argentina, argumentando que éstos pueden ser prioritarios para futuras investigaciones y acciones de manejo. Conocer la biodiversidad de las islas, sus particularidades y su estado de conservación actual podría ser relevante en el futuro para evitar extinciones locales. Además, las islas pueden constituir refugios de taxones únicos y zonas donde el manejo de especies invasoras puede ser más factible. Por otra parte, el conocimiento sobre la ecología de islas puede ser útil para estudiar y conservar otros ecosistemas, tanto terrestres como acuáticos, lo que resulta de gran relevancia en un paisaje global cada vez más fragmentado
Many examples of important ecological pro-cesses come from island ecosystems. This is due to its limited space and biodiversity, as well as to the fact that its geological history and connection with continents are usually known in detail. However, in Argentina there is still a rudimentary knowledge about the birds that depend partially or totally on island ecosystems. In this work, I review and discuss ornithological information on the island ecosystems of Argentina, arguing that they may be a priority for future research and management. Knowing the biodiversity of the islands, their particu-larities and their current conservation status could be relevant in the future to avoid local extinctions. Moreover, islands can provide refuges for unique taxa and areas where invasive species management may be more fea-sible. Furthermore, understanding island ecology can be useful for studying and conserving other ecosystems, both terrestrial and aquatic, which is highly relevant in an increasingly fragmented landscapes
