1. Un doctorado está influenciado por múltiples factores. La relación con el equipo de trabajo, las exigencias académicas y el tiempo disponible para actividades recreativas pueden afectar satisfacción y permanencia en la academia. Aunque se estudiaron los factores que influyen sobre los doctorandos en sus carreras, la mayoría de estos datos proviene del hemisferio norte, dejando un gran vacío de información para regiones como Latinoamérica. 2. El objetivo de este trabajo es a) explorar la experiencia de doctorandos en la Argentina en función de las relaciones interpersonales dentro del ámbito laboral y con relación a las exigencias del doctorado, y b) evaluar cómo estos factores se asocian al estrés, la satisfacción y la consideración de renuncia. Para ello, distribuimos una encuesta en línea entre doctorandos en ciencias naturales y afines desde enero hasta abril del 2024. 3. Los resultados, basados en 192 respuestas, revelan que el estrés y la satisfacción de los estudiantes se correlaciona de manera levemente negativa. El aumento en el estrés y la satisfacción autopercibida se asocian con la consideración de renuncia de manera positiva y negativa, respectivamente. 4. Finalmente, 39.6% de los encuestados consideró renunciar al doctorado, principalmente por cuestiones vinculadas a la relación con sus directores, al reconocimiento y la valoración del trabajo, y a aspectos económicos particulares. 5. Las respuestas abiertas revelan que los motivos percibidos son más amplios, incluyendo la remuneración económica y los altos niveles de exigencia e incertidumbre a que se ven expuestos durante el desarrollo de sus tesis. 6. Implicancias. En este trabajo consideramos esencial hacer foco y continuar explorando los aspectos que identificamos como relevantes en el desarrollo de un doctorado en la Argentina, haciendo hincapié especialmente sobre las buenas prácticas en la interacción director-estudiante, el reconocimiento y la valoración del trabajo del doctorando y el financiamiento estatal.
1. Pursuing a doctorate is influenced by multiple factors. Aspects such as the relationship with the work team, academic demands and time available for recreational activities may affect motivation and permanence in the scientific system. Although the factors influencing PhD students in their careers have been studied, most of this data comes from the Northern Hemisphere, leaving a significant information gap for Latin America. 2. The objective of this study is a) to explore the experiences of PhD students in Argentina based on interpersonal relationship within the workplace and in relation to the demands of the doctorate, and b) to evaluate how these factors are associated with stress, satisfaction and consideration of attrition. To achieve this, we distributed an online survey among PhD students in natural sciences and related fields from January to April 2024. 3. The results, based on 192 responses, reveal that self-perceived student stress and satisfaction were positively and negatively associated with consideration of attrition, respectively. 4. Finally, 39.6% of respondents considered abandoning their doctorate, mainly due to issues related to their relationship with their supervisors, recognition and appreciation of their work, and particular economic issues. 5. The open responses reveal that the perceived reasons were broader, including lack of financial remuneration and the high levels of demand and uncertainty to which they are exposed during the development of their theses. 6. Implications. In this work, we consider it extremely important to focus on and continue addressing the aspects we identified as relevant to the development of doctoral careers in Argentina, with a particular emphasis on good practices in supervisor-PhD student interaction, recognition and appreciation of the PhD students’ work and state funding.
