Los estuarios son ecosistemas productivos que proporcionan bienes y servicios ecosistémicos, aunque el desarrollo humano provoca tensiones que deterioran la calidad de sus aguas. El Río de la Plata presenta relevancia geográfica y socioeconómica, además de áreas importantes en cuanto a la conservación de la biodiversidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar algunas características estructurales y funcionales del ensamble de meso y macroinvertebrados a lo largo de 155 km del intermareal dulceacuícola, aplicando análisis multivariados y comparando los sitios de muestreo sujetos a diferentes tipos de perturbaciones antropogénicas. Se identificaron 58 taxones cuya abundancia total varió entre 570 y 345000 individuos/m² . Los valores más altos de riqueza, diversidad estructural y funcional, y porcentajes de taxones sensibles se registraron en áreas recreativas que presentan zonas costeras vegetadas, alto grado de conectividad y estado natural de los hábitats ribereños. El análisis multivariado ordenó a los sitios de muestreo a lo largo de un gradiente de turbidez- conductividad, y a otro de eutrofización-contaminación. El análisis de conglomerados reveló los siguientes grupos: 1) sitios poco impactados de áreas protegidas y recreativas, 2) sitios con impacto antropogénico y descargas domésticas, 3) sitios altamente impactados por descargas industriales y cloacales, y 4) sitios ubicados en proximidad al frente de máxima turbidez. Estos resultados demuestran que las características del hábitat y del agua determinan los ensambles de invertebrados. Los descriptores estructurales y funcionales analizados pueden actuar de manera confiable en la evaluación de la calidad ecológica y la integridad biótica del sector intermareal rioplatense argentino.
Estuaries are productive ecosystems that provide ecosystem goods and services, although human development causes stresses that deteriorate the quality of their waters. The Río de la Plata river presents geographic and socioeconomic relevance, besides areas of importance in the conservation of biodiversity. The objective of this study was to analyze some of the structural and functional characteristics of the meso and macroinvertebrate assemblage along 155 km of the freshwater intertidal zone, applying multivariate analysis and comparing the sampling sites subject to different types of anthropogenic disturbances. Fifty-eight taxa were identified whose total abundance ranged from 570 to 345000 individuals/m² . The highest values of richness, structural and functional diversity, and percentages of sensitive taxa were recorded in recreational areas that have vegetated coasts, a high degree of connectivity and a natural state of riparian habitats. The multivariate analysis organized the sampling sites along a turbidity-conductivity gradient and a eutrophication-contamination gradient. The cluster analysis revealed the following groups: 1) sites with little impact of protected and recreational areas, 2) sites with anthropogenic impact and domestic discharges, 3) sites highly impacted by industrial and sewage discharges, and 4) sites located close to the front of maximum turbidity. These results showed that the characteristics of the habitat and the water determine the assemblages of invertebrates. The structural and functional descriptors analyzed can act reliably in the evaluation of the ecological quality and the biotic integrity of the Argentinian intertidal sector of the river.
