El daño foliar generalmente afecta negativamente la reproducción de las plantas. Sin embargo, se conoce poco sobre cómo la infección por agallas influye en dicho proceso. Analizamos la relación entre la cantidad de agallas foliares causadas por insectos y la producción de inflorescencias en el arbusto Schinus patagonicus. En 63 arbustos localizados en bosques del norte de la Patagonia estimamos el promedio de agallas por hoja y de inflorescencias asociadas por rama. Un incremento en el número de agallas por hoja se asoció fuertemente con la producción de inflorescencias por rama. Ramas con hojas que poseían en promedio más de cuatro agallas no presentaron inflorescencias. La presencia de agallas foliares se asoció negativamente con el éxito reproductivo de esta especie, sugiriendo que este tipo de infección debería ser considerada como una fuerte presión selectiva.
Foliar damage often affects negatively the reproduction of plants. However, little is know about how gall infection influences this process. We analyzed the relationship between the abundance of foliar galls caused by insects and the production of inflorescences in the shrub Schinus patagonicus. In 63 shrubs located in northern Patagonia forests we estimated mean number of foliar galls per leaf and number of inflorescences associated per branch. The mean number of galls per leaf was strongly and negatively associated with the production of inflorescences per branch. Branches with leaves that showed on average, more than four galls did not have inflorescences. The presence of foliar galls seriously affected the reproductive effort of this shrub species, suggesting that this type of infection should be considered as a strong selective pressure.
