Siendo el glaucoma una de las principales causas de ceguera irreversible a nivel mundial, es de importancia contar con herramientas que permitan la detección en sus primeros estadíos. En este trabajo se explora la capacidad de la sensibilidad al contraste (SC) para detectar tempranamente el glaucoma de ángulo abierto. Para ello se midió la SC en pacientes con glaucoma leve, en dos rangos de edad (20-49 y 50-69 años) y para dos niveles de iluminación. Se realizaron medidas foveales en el nivel fotópico (70 cd/m2) para frecuencias espaciales de 4 c/g y 8 c/g, encontrándose una disminución significativa de la SC de los pacientes respecto al grupo control (p<0,05) para 4 c/g, en ambos rangos etarios. En el nivel mesópico (0,5 cd/m2) se realizaron medidas foveales para 4 c/g, y extrafoveales (8º de excentricidad retiniana) para 2 c/g. En este nivel se encontró una disminución significativa de SC (p<0.05) en el grupo de 50 a 69 años para las medidas foveales. En determinadas condiciones la medida de SC puede ser útil para la detección el glaucoma en sus estadíos tempranos.
Since glaucoma is one of the worldwide leading causes of irreversible blindness, is important to develop tools for early detection. In this work, we explored the ability of the contrast sensitivity (CS) to early detect open-angle glaucoma. We measured CS in patients with mild glaucoma, at two age ranges (20-49 and 50-69 y.o.) and for two light levels. Foveal measurements were carried out at photopic level (70 cd/m2) for 4 c/d and 8 c/d; a significant reduction of the CS in patients respect to the control group (p < 0.05) was found at 4 c/d, for both age ranges. At mesopic light level (0.5 cd/m2) foveal measurements were conducted for 4 c/d and extrafoveal (retinal eccentricity: 8°) for 2 c/d. At this light level, a significant reduction of CS (p < 0.05) was found for the oldest group with foveal conditions. In certain conditions, the measurement of CS could be useful for glaucoma detection at early stage.
