We present an experimental study and introduce a theoretical model of ion transport in electrochemical deposition in a thin cell under the influence of an uniform magnetic field perpendicular to it. The theoretical model consists in the Nernst-Planck equations for ion transport, the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential and the Navier-Stokes equations for the electrolyte. Experimental measurements show that in a cell in a vertical position subject to a magnetic field the deposit branches grow inclined in relation to the electrode and in the direction of the Lorentz force; far from the deposit, convection is suppressed resulting in a stable stratified fluid. The theoretical model predicts that at the tip of the branch the magnetic field breaks the symmetry of the electroconvective contrarotating vortices, enlarging one of them and diminishing the other one. This suggests that the asymmetry due to the magnetic field induces a reorientation of the deposit along the Lorentz force direction. The results of this study indicate that the magnetic field can be used to modulate the pattern of growth in magneto electrochemical deposition (MECD).
