Se calcula la birrefringencia eléctrica del ADN considerando a la molécula como un conjunto de osciladores que interactúan entre sí y con el campo eléctrico de la luz incidente. Se aplica la teoría clásica de DeVoe de interacción de la luz con sistemas moleculares. La birrefringencia se expresa en función de las polarizabilidades de los osciladores que se obtienen a partir del espectro de absorción del ADN. Se emplean datos experimentales de birrefringencia de saturación para analizar las distintas contribuciones de las polarizabilidades ópticas a la birrefringencia del ADN
The electric birefringence of DNA is calculated considering the molecule as a array of oscillators which interact between them and with the electric field of the incident light. The DeVoe’s classic theory of interaction of light with molecular systems is applied. The birefringence is expressed as a function of the oscillators’ polarizability, which is obtained from the absorption spectra of DNA. Experimental data of saturation birefringence is used to analyze the different contributions of the optical polarizability to the birefringence of DNA
