Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to study the Ar+ bombardment induced effect over a (0001) surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). Using a low dose of bombardment we have isolated individual impacts, which show different (√3×√3)R30° superstructures on the neighborhood of the hillocks produced by the bombardment. In the present work we characterize (√3×√3)R30° ringlike and spotlike superstructures, which decay within a distance of 2-6 nm from the hillocks into the graphite lattice. These superstructures cannot be explained by a simple top layer rotation, as suggested by the Moiré pattern hypothesis
