For application to photoacoustics a simple system was developed, based on a closed cylindrical glass cell which was transversally illuminated by 32 blue LEDs uniformly distributed along the pipe. The excitation of the second longitudinal mode was forced when only the central part of the tube, between nodes of the standing wave, was illuminated during half of period. Also, both end quarters were illuminated during the other half of period, in coincidence with the turning off of the central LEDs. Thus the overlapping integral between the acoustic mode and the light excitation was made different from zero whereas a null value would have been obtained with a uniform illumination along the cell. This setup was applied to the measurement of NO₂ diluted in N₂ in a non-flow regime. Moreover, the adsorption of molecules at the glass walls was characterized and the results fit well to a theoretical model based on mono-layer adsorption. This system seems to be practical and cheap for didactic purposes
