A resonant photoacoustic system was developed for detection of gases related to biological processes, particularly to fruit ripening. One of them is ethylene, a gas which regulates several processes in plants. Its influence in fruit ripening is very important from the economical point of view. Our system is based on a single-mode CW CO2 laser tunable through the 9 and 10 μm band with 5 W maximum power. The beam, chopped at variable repetition rate, crosses an aluminum cell whose resonator is closed at both ends with quarter wavelength filters and KCl windows. A microphone is attached to the wall in the middle-point of the resonator. The signal coming from the samples at different repetition rates around the resonance is processed by a lock-in amplifier and transferred to a computer. The system is calibrated for mixtures of ethylene in nitrogen at atmospheric pressure and the setup constant is determined. This constant is used for measuring the absorption cross sections of other substances related to alcoholic fermentation (ethanol, acetaldehyde) at diverse wavelengths. Based on these data, the first measurements on fruits under aerobic conditions are erformed at the lab
